Grand Bahama Island, which includes Freeport and Lucaya, is the second most popular Bahamas destination and the site of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. It’s no mystery why so many are drawn here. By day, explore one of the world’s largest underwater cave systems, three national parks, multiple beaches, historic attractions and great shopping. By night, exciting dining, nightlife and entertainment beckon. Many beautiful resort choices are here, including Freeport Pelican Bay, Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach Resorts and Grand Lucaya Beach & Golf Resorts.

Grand Bahama Island guided tours are a great way to make the most of your time here: you can relax and enjoy your day, knowing you’re not missing a thing. There are cultural, eco, shopping and residential tours – even a distillery tour! Gaze at the gorgeous beachfront on horseback: two-hour rides are available for all levels. The Rand Nature Center in Freeport is a nature-lover’s paradise: 100 acres and a 2,000-foot trail that includes many unique Bahamian birds you won’t see in the United States, Canada or Europe.

Grand Bahama Island beaches generally fall into one of two categories: activity-packed or quiet and secluded. One especially lush and beautiful beach is the Gold Rock Creek Beach, located inside Lucayan National Park. Boaters will find seven full-service marinas on the island. Those who prefer to let someone else captain the waters have many charter choices. If you came to dive, don’t miss the 65-foot reef with caves and caverns, along with other sites: Theo’s Wreck and Shark Junction. Fly-fishing is big on Grand Bahama Island, especially at the flats off Deep Water Cay. Golfers can wander through pine tree stands and dense tropical underbrush at the Lucayan Golf Course or enjoy picturesque lakes at Reef Golf Course.

Port Lucaya Marketplace offers the best shopping, in addition to the stores downtown. Leather, fine linens, jewelry, perfumes, cameras…it’s all duty-free, so your deals are extra-sweet! If authentic Bahamian art and crafts are what you seek, head to the International Bazaar.

The Grand Bahama Island specialty is roast conch: don’t leave without trying it at least once. If you’re here on Fridays, head to the Churchill Garden Bar for its Mini Crab Fest. Red Beard’s Pub is where many locals like to eat. The food and ambiance at Freeport Pelican Bay’s Flying Fish restaurant draws big praise from many visitors. You’ll find a big variety of other cafes and restaurants throughout the resorts, from casual chic to upscale fine dining.

Grand Bahama Island nightlife is among the best in the Bahamas. You can enjoy a cold beer on a moonlit beach bar patio deck. Surround yourself with high-energy gaming and live entertainment at luxurious Treasure Bay Casino. Or choose any option in-between: Bahama Mama’s, Club Amnesia, the family-geared Count Basie Square…the list goes on.
